The condition of a 61-year-old male patient who applied to Hacettepe University Medical Faculty Hospital Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery clinic two years ago with a bone tumor in his maxillofacial region was quite risky.
The surgery for a tumor that had grown on the patient’s face and chin over the years and gained a rather large size had to be planned very well.
In the face of this situation, Hacettepe University Medical Faculty Hospital Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department Professor Dr. İbrahim Vargel and the doctors in his team needed preoperative 3D virtual surgical planning and a medical model of this tumor.
From the patient’s 2D MR and CT images, the tumor on the patient’s face, the bone nerve and vascular structure with which the tumor is associated were meticulously examined using field-specific software, long hours of detailed modeling and different image projections.
CT images were modeled by our medical application engineers with Mimics Innovation Suite 22.0 software so that the tumor structure is all over the face, tumor, bone, nerve and vascular structure can be examined separately and opinions of other surgeons can be obtained in the clinic.
As a result of this detailed study performed before the surgery, Professor Doctor İbrahim Vargel and his team successfully performed the surgery since they had the opportunity to visually study the case in 3D before the operation of this patient.
Medical planning ensures that the patients’ surgeries go more smoothly, shortening the operation times, reducing the length of stay in the hospital and reuniting the patients with their loved ones as soon as possible.
